Protecting Your Home: Long-Term Water Damage Prevention Strategies
10/16/2024 (Permalink)
By implementing proactive measures, you can protect your home from the devastating effects of water damage.
Water damage is a homeowner's worst nightmare in Worcester, MA, with the potential to cause significant structural issues and costly repairs. While restoration companies can help repair the immediate damage, prevention is key to safeguarding your property in the long term. By implementing proactive measures, you can protect your home from the devastating effects of water damage.
Understanding the Risks of Water Damage
Water damage can arise from various sources, including leaking pipes, faulty appliances, and natural disasters. What often begins as a small issue can quickly escalate into a major problem if not addressed promptly. According to an Insurance Information Institute study, water damage and freezing account for almost 24 percent of all homeowner insurance claims. This statistic underscores the importance of taking preventative action before disaster strikes.
Regular Maintenance: Your First Line of Defense
Consistent home maintenance is crucial in preventing water damage. Start by inspecting your roof annually for missing or damaged shingles that could allow water to seep into your home. Clean your gutters regularly to prevent blockages that can lead to water overflow and foundation issues.
Additionally, check your plumbing system for any signs of wear and tear. Replace old or corroded pipes, and ensure that your water heater is in good condition. A small investment in maintenance can save you from the extensive costs of water damage restoration in the future.
Key Maintenance Tips:
- Roof Inspection: Check for leaks, damaged shingles, and flashing around chimneys.
- Gutter Cleaning: Clear debris regularly to avoid blockages.
- Plumbing Checks: Inspect for leaks, corrosion, and pipe damage.
- Appliance Monitoring: Ensure that appliances like dishwashers and washing machines are functioning correctly.
Implementing Water Detection Systems
Technology plays a significant role in modern water damage prevention. Installing water leak detection systems can alert you to leaks before they become serious problems. These systems can be connected to your home’s smart devices, enabling you to monitor your home even when you’re away. Some advanced systems can even shut off your water supply automatically if a significant leak is detected, providing an extra layer of protection.
Landscaping for Water Damage Prevention
Proper landscaping is another long-term strategy to prevent water damage. Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling near your home. Installing a French drain or a sump pump can also help manage excess water and protect your home’s foundation from water-related issues.
Landscaping Tips:
- Grading: Ensure the soil slopes away from your home.
- French Drains: Install to divert water away from your foundation.
- Sump Pumps: Use in basements or low-lying areas to manage excess water.
Invest in Quality Materials
When building or renovating your home, opt for water-resistant materials. Choose water-resistant drywall for areas prone to moisture, such as basements or bathrooms. Investing in quality materials will reduce the likelihood of water damage and make your home more resilient in the long run.
Conclusion
Preventing water damage is not just about responding to leaks as they happen but about taking proactive steps to safeguard your home for the future. By conducting regular maintenance, implementing modern technology, landscaping effectively, and choosing quality materials, you can protect your home from the costly and often devastating effects of water damage. Taking these steps today will give you peace of mind and protect your investment for years to come.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Repairing Water-Damaged Walls
6/13/2024 (Permalink)
By following these steps, you can effectively repair water-damaged walls and restore your home to its preloss condition.
Water damage to walls can occur for various reasons, including burst pipes, roof leaks, or flooding. When left untreated, water damage can lead to structural issues, mold growth, and poor indoor air quality. Fortunately, repairing water-damaged walls is a manageable task with the right approach and tools. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of repairing water-damaged walls, helping you restore your home to its pre-damage condition effectively.
Assess the Damage
Before beginning the repair process, carefully assess the extent of the water damage to your walls. Look for signs of water staining, swelling, or soft spots, indicating moisture intrusion and potential structural damage. Identify any areas of mold growth or mildew, as these will need to be addressed during the repair process.
Remove Damaged Materials
Start by removing any visibly damaged materials, such as wet drywall, insulation, or baseboards. Use a utility knife or drywall saw to cut away water-damaged drywall and insulation, ensuring you remove all affected areas to prevent mold growth and further damage.
Dry the Area Thoroughly
Once damaged materials have been removed, thoroughly dry the affected area to prevent mold growth and further water damage. Use fans, dehumidifiers, and air movers to facilitate drying and improve air circulation. Monitor moisture levels regularly to ensure the area is completely dry before proceeding with repairs.
Treat Mold and Mildew
If mold or mildew is present, it's essential to treat the affected area before proceeding with repairs. Once treated, allow the area to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Replace Damaged Materials
Once the area is dry and free of mold and mildew, it's time to replace the damaged materials. Cut new drywall to fit the affected area, ensuring a snug fit against adjoining walls and ceilings. Secure the new drywall in place using drywall screws, then tape and mud the seams to create a smooth finish.
Prime and Paint
After the drywall has been installed and finished, prime the repaired area to seal the surface and ensure proper adhesion of the paint. Once the primer has dried, apply a coat of paint to match the surrounding walls, blending the repaired area seamlessly with the rest of the room.
Monitor for Signs of Moisture
After completing the repair process, monitor the repaired area for signs of moisture or water damage regularly. Keep an eye out for water stains, mold growth, or musty odors, as these may indicate ongoing issues that require further attention.
By following these steps and taking proactive measures to address water damage promptly, you can effectively repair water-damaged walls and restore your home to its preloss condition. If you encounter extensive water damage or are unsure how to proceed with repairs, don't hesitate to contact a professional restoration company like SERVPRO of Worcester for expert assistance and reliable restoration services.
Common DIY Water Damage Restoration Mistakes to Avoid
2/14/2024 (Permalink)
Facing water damage in your home demands immediate attention and action. Many homeowners take the initiative to handle the restoration themselves, but certain oversights can lead to further issues. Let's explore some common mistakes to steer clear of when during DIY water damage restoration:
1. Lack of Proper Tools
An often underestimated aspect is the importance of having the right tools. Relying solely on household items may fall short in effectively removing water and drying affected areas. Invest in or rent professional-grade equipment like water extractors, dehumidifiers, and air movers to ensure a thorough cleanup.
2. Underestimating the Damage
Believing that water damage is inconsequential can be a huge mistake. Even seemingly small incidents can escalate into significant problems if not addressed quickly. Neglecting water damage or assuming it will resolve itself could lead to mold growth, structural issues, and other concerns.
3. Rushing Through Cleanup
Rushing through the cleanup process without ensuring proper drying and disinfection is counterproductive. Inadequate drying may leave hidden pockets of moisture, allowing mold and mildew growth to flourish. Take the time needed to thoroughly dry all affected areas, including those harder to reach.
4. Inadequate Water Extraction
Standard household tools like mops and buckets might seem sufficient but often fail to extract water thoroughly. Leaving excess water can lead to persistent moisture which allows mold and mildew to grow. Utilize professional-grade water extraction equipment for a more effective cleanup.
5. Overlooking Proper Disinfection
Water damage introduces various contaminants and bacteria. Simply drying the area won't suffice; thorough cleaning and disinfection are crucial to prevent mold growth. Use suitable disinfectants to sanitize all affected surfaces.
6. Neglecting Safety Measures
Water damage restoration involves potential hazards like electrical risks, contaminated water, and unstable structures. Prioritize safety by turning off electricity in affected areas, wearing protective gear, and being cautious of slippery surfaces and weakened structures.
When tackling water damage restoration on your own, avoiding these common errors is crucial. Quick action, the right tools, thorough drying, proper disinfection, and, when necessary, seeking professional guidance are key elements for successful restoration. Remember, your home's well-being and value are at stake, and handling water damage promptly and correctly is crucial for long-term safety and preservation.
The Top 10 Causes of Water Damage and How to Prevent Them
10/14/2023 (Permalink)
We understand that Worcester, MA, residents face unique challenges when it comes to protecting their homes from water damage, especially with the New England weather. In this blog, we will discuss the top 10 causes of home water damage in Worcester and provide practical tips on how to prevent them. By being proactive and taking these measures, you can save yourself from the headaches and expenses associated with water damage restoration.
Roof Leaks
Worcester's heavy snowfall and frequent rainstorms can put extra stress on your roof. Regularly inspect and maintain your roof to identify and repair leaks promptly. Consider installing gutter guards to prevent clogs and ice dams that can lead to water seepage.
Basement Flooding
With Worcester's high water table, basement flooding is a common issue. Install a sump pump and backup battery system to ensure water is pumped away from your home. Additionally, make sure your basement is properly sealed to prevent groundwater infiltration.
Burst Pipes
Winter in Worcester can be brutal, and frozen pipes are a real concern. Insulate your pipes and let faucets drip during freezing temperatures. If you leave for an extended period during the winter, consider shutting off your water supply and draining the pipes.
Faulty Appliances
Regularly inspect and maintain your appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators. Replace old or worn-out hoses and connections to prevent leaks. Install water sensors that can detect leaks and shut off the water supply automatically.
Clogged Drains and Sewers
Leaves, debris, and grease can clog drains and sewers, leading to backups and water damage. Schedule routine drain cleaning and be cautious about what you flush down toilets and drains.
Window and Door Leaks
Ensure that windows and doors are properly sealed to prevent rainwater infiltration. Re-caulk and weatherstrip if necessary, especially before the rainy season in Worcester.
HVAC System Leaks
Regularly inspect your HVAC system, including the air conditioner and furnace. Change filters as recommended and check for condensation or leaks, which can cause water damage if left unattended.
Foundation Cracks
Cracks in your home's foundation can allow water to seep into your basement or crawl space. Inspect your foundation regularly and repair any cracks promptly. Consider waterproofing your basement walls.
Poor Drainage
In Worcester, inadequate yard drainage can lead to water pooling near your home's foundation. Grade your yard away from the house, install downspout extensions, and create proper drainage channels to divert water away from your property.
Neglected Gutters
Clogged gutters can cause rainwater to overflow and damage your home's siding and foundation. Clean your gutters regularly and ensure they are securely attached to your home.

In this, our first installment of “Ask a SERVPRO Pro” we speak with SERVPRO of Worcester’s Manager of Business Development, Sean O’Neill. Sean is a seasoned cleanup and restoration professional, holding IICRC certifications in Applied Microbial Remediation and Water Damage Restoration.
We asked Sean, “How can we prepare for the spring thaw?” This is what he had to say:
It’ s been a long, cold winter. We are all looking forward to Spring, but with it comes its own set of challenges. With rising temperatures, melting snow, the potential for spring storms & flooding the possibility for water damage climbs. The best way to prevent water damage is to be prepared.
Spring is known for its unpredictable weather. The thawing of snow and ice in spring can lead to water damage. Follow these tips to protect your home or business:
- Ensure drains take water away from your property and that they are not obstructed with debris.
- Be sure to remove snow from around your property. This helps to prevent melting snow from draining into the building.
- Consider having your roof inspected - make sure it hasn’t sustained winter damage and is ready for spring storms.
- Check and maintain your gutters and downspouts. Backed up gutters and downspouts can overflow lead to water damage- make sure they are clear of debris and that water flows freely.
- Check grading around home to ensure water is directed away.
- Check your foundation for cracks. If you do find cracks, we would advise having them, assessed and repaired by professional specializing in foundation repairs and waterproofing.
- Check that your sump pump is working. If your area is prone to floods, this can be your first line of defense against water damage caused by basement flooding.
- Review your insurance. Not all home owner’s insurance covers flood damage, familiarize yourself with your coverage. Know that if more is needed, it can take up to 30 days to take effect.

3/10/2021 (Permalink)
We’ll make it “Like it never even happened,” and we’re just a phone call away, (508) 757-7885.
As we look towards spring, we’re reminded of the old proverb “April showers bring May flowers”. While it’s a poetic way of saying good things are on the way, it’s also a reminder that April can be a notoriously rainy month. In addition to those flower friendly showers, it can also be full of severe spring weather. This could include floods, heavy winds or even tornadoes.
Don’t leave disaster prep to chance. Check out these Spring Weather Safety Tips from ready.gov
Ready.gov Spring Weather Safety Tips
- Flood insurance takes 30 days to take effect. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Purchase and review your plan now to protect your family for the future! www.ready.gov/financial-preparedness
- Heavy rain to areas that have been experiencing drought can cause flash flooding. Learn how to prepare: www.ready.gov/plan
- Tornadoes can be extremely dangerous. Safe places include storm shelters and basements — but if not available, an interior room without windows can also be protective. If you receive a tornado warning, take shelter immediately! www.ready.gov/tornadoes
- What does being Ready look like? When it comes to tornadoes, it means knowing your ‘safe place’ and practicing going there well before severe weather arrives. www.ready.gov/tornadoes
- Severe weather can knock out power. Be prepared by gathering supplies for each household member.
- Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows. Never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven.
- Backup power can keep you connected during an emergency. Have alternative power sources on hand to power your devices in case of a power outage.
- Anywhere it rains, it can flood. Learn your risk level for floods by entering your address at https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search

HOW CRITICAL ARE THE FIRST 24 HOURS?
1/6/2021 (Permalink)
Fire or water losses, even smaller incidents, can result in costly claims over time. The longer smoke, soot, or moisture have to permeate contents and structural components, the more secondary damage one can expect to encounter.
SERVPRO® professionals have been performing fire and water cleanup and restoration services for nearly 50 years. Experience has shown that fast, appropriate action delivered within the first 24 hours can dramatically reduce secondary damage. Smoke and soot have less time to chemically interact and damage or destroy contents, and moisture is prevented from spreading and breaking down structural components or promoting the growth of mold and mildew.
Offering 24-hour emergency services, SERVPRO® professionals are committed to responding to fire and water claims during the most critical time period following a loss. Usually onsite in less than four hours, SERVPRO® arrives prepared to begin emergency mitigation services to help prevent secondary damage to the structure and contents.
SERVPRO® utilizes specific industry technology designed for the collection and reporting of claims information for the insurance industry. SERVPRO® professionals can quickly gather the necessary information an adjuster will need to authorize the cleanup and restoration process. The end result is a better, more informed decision-making process, which can speed up the cleanup and restoration of the policyholder's property.
The objective of critical response is to help return homeowners and business owners' properties back to its preloss condition while also controlling claims costs. Your local SERVPRO® franchise can provide the emergency service, mitigation, cleanup and restoration experience and industry-specific technology to help you accomplish these goals. When a policyholder experiences a fire or water loss, even those that fall under the deductible limit or are excluded under their policy, reach out to your local SERVPRO® team to help protect their property and contents now and in the future.

Water Damage or Flooding? Call Us Today (508) 757-7885
Small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time.
The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. The professionals of SERVPRO® of Worcester have the equipment, training, and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss.
When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. Your SERVPRO® of Worcester professionals will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO® franchise professionals.
Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® franchise professionals to monitor the drying process.
Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® professionals can calculate and create an environment most
conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.
You need to know the professionals at SERVPRO® of Worcester have the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Flooding and Sewage Back-ups: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth More Than a Pound of Cure.
4/30/2020 (Permalink)
If your home or business is located in an area subject to periodic flooding or where sewage backups have occurred it’s important to implement preventive or pro-active measures to prevent and/or minimize the nature and extent of flooding and back-up damage.
Preventive Actions:
- Waterproofing the building foundation and/or sealing cracks in foundation floor or walls
- Installation of a check valve or shut-off valve on the building sewer close to where it enters the structure.
**Make sure you check with the proper sewer authority prior to taking this action! - Raising or removing any sink, toilet, washing machine, etc. in the basement that may be subject to backups when the sewer system surcharges.
Pro-active Actions:
- Purchasing or installing a sump pump to pump out water that collects in the low point of the basement
- Ensure that building gutter downspouts and drains are directed away from the foundation and toward low points away from the structure
- Try to keep furniture and valuables above flood levels where flooding has previously occurred
- If minor flooding occurs, follow the water to its point-of-entry and seal cracks or defects to the extent possible.
Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
Please remember flood insurance is also vitally important where properties are known to be in floodplains or flood prone areas.
More information on prevention and flood insurance is available on the FEMA website.

Preventing Water Damage Is a Much Cheaper Than Paying For Repairs
4/30/2020 (Permalink)
Water damage can weaken your home’s foundation, eventually causing serious structural damage. Damp wood invites termites and carpenter ants; it causes mold and mildew. Well you know what they say about an ounce of prevention. Well this is absolutely the case when it comes to water damage and your property. Let’s face it- it will cost much less money, trouble and stress to prevent damage from happening then repairing it once it happens.
Here are ten easy prevention tips:
- Clean your gutters.
- Direct downspouts 5-10’ away from the house
- Slope your yard away from the foundation
- Test your sump pump once a year
- Make sure to check your sump pump frequently during storm season
- Repair noticeable drips in pipes
- Check for dark spots on ceilings and under pipes
- Repair any cracked caulking
- Fix all water leaks.
- Replace missing roof shingles.

Staying Safe In A Water Damaged Home In Cherry Valley
8/15/2019 (Permalink)
Staying Safe During A Water Catastrophe
Once your home has been struck by a water catastrophe, it immediately becomes a much riskier place to move about and live in. While we firmly recommend allowing SERVPRO technicians to provide all guidance and operate to the fullest extent of their ability, there may be times when you, the homeowner, must enter the damaged portion of your homes. If so, be sure to take these safety precautions beforehand.
Follow Our Guidance
SERVPRO of Worcester is not here just for the simple water removal job in your Cherry Valley home - we are here to help with all aspects of the disaster. Our representatives are well-known for their approachability and communication skills, and this is perhaps most evident with safety rules. Our personnel is there to guide you on what you should and should not do around your home, and your safety is always their top priority. If we tell you to avoid an area or task, it is not for our poor intentions. These suggestions are to keep you out of harm's way and to prevent any further damage from occurring.
Face Masks
Water damage can create some harmful respiratory conditions, especially if mold has started to take root. Whenever you are near the damaged portion of your home, you should be wearing a face mask to keep out harmful chemicals and pathogens.
Gloves
A good pair of gloves is essential for doing anything in the damaged part of your home. They should be rubberized to avoid any risk of electrocution, thick to avoid rips and tears, and well-fitted to ensure as little water as possible reaches your skin. Try to avoid disposable gloves, as these do not provide suitable protection in a water damage scenario.
Long Sleeves
You should always wear long-sleeved clothing in a damaged area, even if it is a hot day. Long sleeves protect your skin from harmful chemicals and hazards, especially if the clothing is composed of a strong material.

Flood Restoration in Worcester from a Faulty Appliance
4/18/2019 (Permalink)
Emergency Flood Damage Restoration Services
A flood disaster in Worcester due to a broken appliance can happen anytime. In fact, any appliance whose fixtures (e.g., pipes) lead into a water line can develop spring leaks or blockages that can cause serious flooding if unattended to. It is usually difficult to predict when a household equipment is going to fail on you, and accidents often strike unexpectedly. It can happen when you are on vacation, treating you to a rude awakening on your return home.
Your best bet against flood damage from a faulty appliance in Worcester is consulting a reputable restoration company. With many years of experience in water damage restoration, SERVPRO has the expertise to return your property to preloss conditions as quickly as disaster hits. As a part of your community, our IICRC-trained technicians are extremely efficient, adequately equipped, and highly motivated to respond swiftly to any emergency.
A number of appliances can cause flood damage in the house, including refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters. A kitchen flood, in particular, can ruin cabinets and counter tops, and you may have to replace them in case of extensive damage. After some time, mold and mildew may develop due to prolonged exposure to water. Additionally, the adhesive material that helps hold counter tops in place can become loose and fall off because of excessive moisture.
Standing water from a dysfunctional dishwasher can cause irreversible damage to the flooring tiles, sometimes requiring complete removal and replacement. This additional expense can be overbearing, especially in a disaster situation. If the water contained oil and grease, it could contaminate surfaces in accessible and inaccessible areas. SERVPRO technicians use special solutions to clean up and deodorize these surfaces.
The decision to replace or salvage flood damaged equipment from a broken appliance depends on the level of damage, the length of time in the water, and the type of insurance coverage (if applicable). For instance, repairing certain equipment may void their warranty. On the other hand, if the appliance was old, replacing it with a newer model can provide better energy efficiency, subsequently saving you money on monthly energy bills. Clogged parts should be replaced to avoid safety hazards such as electrical shock, explosion, and fire outbreak.
Flood damage from a household appliance can be dramatic. As a locally owned and operated business, SERVPRO of South Worcester is strategically located to respond immediately when you need us. Call us anytime at (508) 757-7885.

SERVPRO Can Help with Restoring your Treasured Items
Only when you are struggling to recover from fire damage do you realize the overwhelming number of things you have in your house, all vulnerable to the effects of the smoke and heat. Once the fire is out, and the structural damage to the building itself is being addressed, you move on to the dozens and dozens of items that have been damaged or soiled by the fire, or both. SERVPRO has developed a comprehensive protocol to manage the personal property and structural components in your home including fixtures and decorative items. Our extensive experience with fire restoration gives us a perspective we share with you as we strive to make it “Like it never even happened.”
Somehow the little things that are dirtied and damaged in a fire can cause the greatest emotional burden to the homeowner. When the window coverings you took such pains to coordinate with furnishings and wall color hang in grim, sooty disarray it is difficult to know where to start to fix the problem that seems bigger than draperies. Similarly, when the beautiful chandelier that lit up your family’s faces on holidays is coated with grime or vintage pictures of your forebears are streaked with inky residue and curl up from moisture, our promise to restore your possessions to pre-fire condition may ring a little hollow. Fire damage in Cherry Valley must be restored from the bottom up with every method and trick we have in our training toolbox. If the memories have to be trashed, it is impossible to feel like even a completely remodeled space is still your home. We won't let that happen.
We at SERVPRO understand that your home is so much more than ceilings and walls. Our technicians are trained in heirloom, document and picture restoration. A cherished lamp or the kitchen cabinets your father helped you build are worth the effort to restore, and we will develop a plan to do so. Our team is well schooled on how to turn back the clock on fire damage by using the correct cleaning products and proven methods so you can gaze on beloved portraits again by the light of your chosen fixtures. This focus does not mean we ignore serious fire damage issues behind walls and in the attic, but it is part of our balanced approach that makes us a trusted business in our communities.
Let us restore you home and your heart with the team at SERVPRO of Worcester. A call to (508) 757-7885 will be answered 24/7 with an inspection of your fire damage scheduled as soon as possible.
Water Removal in Your Crawl Space
2/11/2019 (Permalink)
Rely on Professional Services to Remove Water from and Remediate Your Crawl Space
Crawl spaces are low areas building contractors in Cherry Valley may put under the first floor of a home, so there is access to necessary wiring and plumbing. They can also be storage areas under your home if you do not have a basement and the floor is concrete. However, standing water can build up sometimes in the area, causing a multitude of problems. It can be caused by a kitchen waste line leaking, a leaking sewer line, gutter downspouts incorrectly directed, sprinkler water coming through a crawl space’s vents, or a naturally-occurring high groundwater table.
When this happens, you need the professional help of a water removal remediation company. It is not recommended to do the water removal in your Cherry Valley crawl space yourself because proper remediation and water extraction requires particular expertise and equipment to handle the problem thoroughly. SERVPRO's IICRC-certified technicians are specially trained to handle this type of issue, and we can be reached at any time you need us. We move fast to get to your home.
We first need to get the standing water out of your crawl space. To do so, we have industrial strength truck-mounted pumps. The water must be removed before it starts to erode your foundation or create mold growth, and this is the fastest way to do so.
Since concrete is cooler than other kinds of materials, moisture can stay even after the standing water has been removed. The moisture left behind can create mold and mildew growth, so it is essential we dry the crawlspace out quickly, instead of letting it sit and dry on its own. The best way for us to do so is by using dehumidifiers and fans which we carefully place in your crawlspace to dry it out most efficiently.
The equipment is checked by SERVPRO staff daily and rearranged for optimal drying as needed. Once everything is completely dry, we sanitize the affected area as well.
SERVPRO of Worcester can take care of your water removal problem in your crawl space in a short amount of time. Anyone in the areas of Cherry Valley, the Wachusett Region, Worcester, and South Worcester should call us as soon as you recognize an issue by dialing (508) 757-7885.

Water Damage in Cherry Valley can affect even the best-cared for homes
11/20/2016 (Permalink)
No matter how much effort you put into caring for and maintaining your home, accidents do happen. Water woes can start inside, in the form of leaks, overflows, and other mishaps, or come from the outdoors in the form of floods, rainwater, or even melting ice. Once water has entered, it's imperative that it be cleaned up and removed, before it can damage your home.
Your Cherry Valley home needs to be protected from all types of water damage. When you have any of the above situations or another, that is allowing water to enter your home, you need to stop the water from entering, and then clean up the mess. Because water does not stay still unless it is in a container, it's important to call for professionals to get rid of the water that you can't see.
SERVPRO professionals have training in dealing with water of all sources. They know how to not only eliminate the water itself, but also any pathogens it can carry with it, or pick up and spread through your home. Extraction of water only rids your home of the moisture, but not the pathogens. We can make your home safe again, "Like it never even happened."
Water can damage your home in many ways. It can lead to secondary water damage, also. Primary damage from water results in soiled and waterlogged personal belongings, and possible contamination when the water is from a source that is contaminated. This can include carpeting, clothing, toys and books, cabinetry, and many other things.
When your home's windows are open, they can allow rain to enter, spilling out onto the floor, and spreading out until it can seep in somewhere through some tiny crack or other break in the floor. While it may seem harmless, even rainwater can create water damage over time if left alone.
To help protect not only your home but also the efforts you've put into caring for and maintaining it, call SERVPRO of South Worcester at (508) 757-7885. We're always available to help you make your home dry, safe, and healthy again.

Water damage to your flooring can be a inconvenience but not with the professionals! Call SERVPRO of South Worcester! (508)757-7885.
Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time.
The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of South Worcester have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO of South Worcester professionals will answer your call with rapid action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals.
- Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
- Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
- Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
- Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
- Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor- causing particles.
The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO of South Worcester has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”
Like it never even happened.

Types of Water Damages and What to Do About Them
3/23/2016 (Permalink)
When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup. There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals. When you have a water damage, don’t leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO of Worcester! Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.
Damage from Clean Water
- Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
- Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
- Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
- Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
- Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
- Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
- Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
- Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
Damage from Contaminated Water
- Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
- Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
- Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
- Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
- Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.
Floods Can Happen -Even in Worcester!
5/15/2015 (Permalink)
Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. It doesn’t matter if your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert–there is always potential for flood damage - even here in Worcester!
Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, does not mean you won't in the future. In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3 billion in annual losses in the United States. Commercial flood claims average more than $75,000.
According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
- If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Worcester. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of Worcester is prepared to handle any sized disaster. The sooner work begins, the sooner order can be restored. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Worcester will help you take it back.

Protecting Your Property From a Worcester Winter
12/5/2014 (Permalink)
Cold weather can wreak havoc and cause costly damage to your home or business if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious propery damage. While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared, and help take the sting out of winter weather. To help prevent weather-related damages, consider taking the following precautions before winter weather hits.
- Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
- Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, causing roof damage and interior water problems.
- Clean chimneys and exhaust systems to ensure they are free of debris.
- Test gas lines if they have been dormant to ensure they are in good working order with no leaks.
- Inspect your property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
- Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. Make sure all exterior pipes are properly insulated.
- If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
- Make sure all exterior doors, garages, roll-ups and windows have sufficient weather stripping.
- Ask a SERVPRO® of South Worcester professional about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

It's The Water You Don't See

The Science of Drying
6/9/2014 (Permalink)
Did you know, there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professional will:
- Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
- Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
- Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.
What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material–but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.
For this reason, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. We also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.
The bottom-line? SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals have the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”
