June is Pet Preparedness Month

Your pets are an important member of your family, so they need to be included in your family's emergency plan. To prepare for the unexpected follow these tips with your pets in mind:
- Make a plan.
- Build an emergency kit.
- Stay informed.
If you have a plan in place for you and your pets, you will likely encounter less difficulty, stress and worry when you need to make a decision during an emergency. If local offi cials ask you to evacuate, that means your pet should evacuate too. If you leave your pets behind, they may end up lost, injured, or worse. Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets inside, which is why it is so important to have a plan in place ahead of time. Consider having your pet microchipped too! If you get separated, this will help you identify them.

A group of local business owners become a Proud Partner of the Boston Red Sox
A group of SERVPRO franchise owners in northern New England is proud to announce their collective sponsorship of the Boston Red Sox for the 2022 season. The SERVPRO owner group, which is made up of more than 30 SERVPRO franchise owners, is excited to come together and partner with their beloved Red Sox, making this sponsorship one of the first of its kind for SERVPRO.
"This new deal illustrates the SERVPRO family's love for their local communities, fellow New Englanders, and America's favorite pastime," said Jesse Mathewson, SERVPRO Marketing Team Member.
The sponsorship is marked by two LED signs that will illuminate SERVPRO's distinctive green and orange on the first and third baselines at every home game in historic Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. The group will also sponsor National Clean Up Day on September 17, including the pregame ceremony and in-park promotions when the Red Sox host the Kansas City Royals.
This isn't the first interaction between the Red Sox and the brand, as SERVPRO's certified restoration specialists had the honor of cleaning and sanitizing Fenway Park at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
"Being selected to assist an institution like Fenway Park, prioritizing safety above all else, following all IICRC guidelines and CDC protocols, was a privilege," Mathewson said. "Ever since that initial interaction with such a first-class organization, we knew we wanted to take the next step to making the partnership bigger."
SERVPRO's full spectrum of restoration, mitigation, construction, cleaning, and decontamination services are offered year-round, but one thing SERVPRO and the Boston Red Sox have in common is how each gears up during the Spring season.

SERVPRO, along with its more than 1,900 franchise owners across the U.S. and Canada, is proud to be able to give back
to first responders in two ways in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 this summer – and beyond.
SERVPRO is thrilled to announce its support of the First Responders Children’s Foundation. FRCF does the noble work of
providing financial support to children and families who have lost a parent in the line of duty or who are enduring hardship
due to tragedy. Beyond that, FRCF funds educational programs operated by first responder organizations that benefit
children and the communities in which they live.
To launch the relationship with FRCF, SERVPRO is donating an initial $100,000 to help support FRCF’s mission.
“As CEO, I cannot overstate how proud SERVPRO is to present the Firefighter Appreciation Program or how excited we
are to announce our support of the First Responders Children’s Foundation. We applaud the foundation’s work, and we are

National Volunteer Week offers the opportunity for us all to celebrate, recognize, and encourage in volunteerism in our local and world community.
This year’s theme is: The Value of One, The Power of Many, which reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose.
This past year has been difficult for everyone but even in these unprecedented times we have seen people supporting family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. People have been standing up for their beliefs, and sharing insights on how to create a more just and equitable society.
The 2021 theme beautifully reflects the individual and collective efforts we have seen during the pandemic, and it sets the tone for re-imagining the next 20 years as the value of one act and the
power of many enables us to thrive together.
COVID-19 hasn’t slowed down the need for volunteers but it has altered how and where we can donate our time.

A Salute to First Responders

SERVPRO® recognizes these and the countless other first responders in our communities for keeping our communities safe.
"When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” This famous Mr. Rogers quote comes to mind when we celebrate first responders: those who arrive first on the scene of any disaster or emergency.
In the event of a disaster or emergency, there are many different agencies and people in your community who are ready to respond. Whether it is a house fire or a hurricane, we are thankful every day for these first responders.
Local fire and police departments, as well as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), are often first on the scene of an emergency. In the U.S., there are more than 29,000 fire departments with 1,217,300 total firefighters, according to the U.S. Fire Administration website. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports almost 245,040 EMTs and paramedics in total across the country. There are about 19,000 federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies, employing more than 875,000 fulltime sworn officers, according to the Uniformed Crime Reporting Program collected by the FBI.
When events such as natural disasters strike, different branches of the military are often a first line of response. The Army National Guard and Air National Guard, with over 354,000 soldiers, respond domestically when deployed by their state Governor, often during states of emergency from weather-related events. They can also be called upon during terrorist attacks or civil unrest or called overseas by the President of the United States. Active-duty soldiers can also be called upon for certain domestic events as well.
As a part of FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), these volunteers are trained to be prepared for any disasters that may affect your local area in an effort to support professional responders. CERT volunteers are trained in “basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations,” according to FEMA. With more than 2,750 CERT programs, over 600,000 individuals have been trained nationwide. Teams are managed locally but supported nationally by FEMA.

March Community Spotlight: The Worcester Boys & Girls Club

We can all play a role in helping our community stay safe and healthy through the support of organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of Worcester.
Worcester, MA March, 2021 –The Boys & Girls Club of Worcester is dedicated to helping youth in our community, especially those in great need. For many of the children and families the club services life before the pandemic was challenging but now it is even more so.
In the past year the Boys & Girls Club has been working hard to meet a series of unique challenges. They were proud to designated by the Department of Early Education and Care as an emergency care site, providing childcare for the children of first responders, hospital personnel and essential workers. As a Learning Division, they provide children with on-sight technology for remote learning and support their Licensed School Age program. In addition to childcare and education support, the Club works to provide their kids and families with the resources needed to address food insecurities they may be facing in these unprecedented times.
We at SERVPRO know we can all play a role in helping our community stay safe and healthy through the support of organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Worcester. This month we were proud to donate to their food pantry. We look forward to offering our continued support in the future. We encourage you to consider helping however you can.

The Dreaded FLU SEASON

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of a flu infection can result in hospitalization or death, according to the American Red Cross.
Seasonal flu in the United States occurs in the fall and winter months. While influenza viruses circulate year-round, most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, but activity can last as late as May.
Flu viruses are spread by droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby or be inhaled into their lungs.
Healthy habits to help prevent the flu include getting vaccinated, avoiding close contact with others, staying at home when you're sick, covering your mouth and nose, washing your hands, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and practicing other good health habits.

DECEMBER 6-12, 2020: National Influenza Vaccination Week
Starting in 2005, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) established the National Influenza Vaccination Week to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination throughout the holiday season and beyond.
During the 2018-2019 flu season, the CDC estimates the flu caused 49 million flu-related illnesses (more than the combined populations of Texas and Florida), 960,000 flu hospitalizations (more than the number of staffed hospital beds in the United States), and 79,000 deaths (more than the average number of people who attend the Super Bowl each year.)
If you’ve already gotten the flu this season, you should still get vaccinated to protect yourself against other strands of the flu. People with a high risk of complications from the flu include young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions, and people over the age of 65. Get a flu shot today to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness and raise funds for research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ultimately to find a cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
At some point in our lives most of us will be touched by cancer -it may be our own battle or that of someone close to us. The bottom line, we all have a vested interest in this battle. How will you join the cause?

SERVPRO of Worcester and The Boys & Girls Club of Worcester First Annual Summer BBQ

It was far from your typical BBQ, we loved every minute of it and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
Worcester, MA August 27, 2020 The Boys & Girls Club of Worcester has worked so hard this summer serving our community’s children and their families. We wanted to do something to celebrate their efforts, say thank you and offer a little bit traditional summer fun to the club’s children and staff.
What better way to celebrate the end of summer than a BBQ? We brought the grill, the food, a tent to stay dry and a lot of love for our community. Being prepared is what we do, masks and gloves on, we set up a BBQ station outside the club. Our team worked hard cooking and plating food. It was SERVPRO's great pleasure to be of service. Even the on/off rain, sometimes coming in down pours wasn’t enough to dampen spirits. We’re SERVPRO, we know a thing or two about dealing with water and storms.
The Boys and Girls Club of Worcester staff made did an amazing job making sure all responsible socially distanced protocol was followed. They made sure that the food got to where it needed to be, everyone was served and most importantly that their kids were well cared for.
Hearing the excited shouts of “thank you” from happy kids inside, knowing that we were able to offer a little taste of “back to normal” with something as simple as hotdogs & hamburgers made this one of the best days our team has had this summer.
It was far from your typical BBQ, we loved every minute of it and we can’t wait to do it again next year!

National Day of Service and Remembrance September 11, 2020

In honor and memory of those who died on September 11, 2001, as well as the survivors and first responders, the National Day of Service and Remembrance was established in 2009 as a day of reflection. Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, this is a day to come together just as Americans did following the events of 9/11 to help and honor their neighbors in need.
On this day and every day, SERVPRO® salutes those heroes who arrive in the greatest times of need and stand strong in the face of disaster. These heroes are the first responders who keep our communities safe in unprecedented times.

We’ve said it before and we will say it again, not all heroes wear capes. Some wear uniforms, scrubs, masks, and gloves. They are our family, friends and neighbors who stand ready to protect and serve our community. Not just in these unprecedented days of COVID but EVERY day. They are our local First Responders -made up of fire fighters, police, EMTs, doctors and nurses- all on the frontlines caring for and protecting this community we call home.

Honoring Fallen Heroes
As a community we mourn the loss of fallen heroes and their families, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Heroes such as these deserve to be honored and remembered. We were proud to raise funds for heroes such as Lt. Jason Menard. His selflessness, service and sacrifice to the people of Worcester will not soon be forgotten. It’s support we’re proud to provide but hope for days when it’s not needed.
Annual First Responders Bowl Watch Party
SERVPRO is the proud sponsor of the First Responders Bowl. It’s our way to say thanks for the bravery and courage of those who arrive first at the scene of an emergency. The bowl celebrates our neighbors, family and fellow citizens who serve as first responders protecting and preserving peace in our communities. Annually SERVPRO of Worcester & SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/ Westborough hosts a watch party. We invite local first responders to a watch party and we celebrate all the good work they do for our communities.
Community Events & Fund Raisers
We have always welcomed the opportunity to join and participate in community events and fundraisers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to help raise funds and build lasting relationships. We have been proud to participate in the Heroes Cup Golf tournament as well as other local fund raisers. We look forward to future events and continuing to build lasting relationships.

Proud to Support Local and Diverse Business!
Local businesses and business owners- they don’t just work in our community, they live here. They our neighbors and friends. They are what make our community special and are essential to our economy.
Local and diverse business brings growth and innovation to our communities. They are specially vested in our towns and neighborhoods - providing employment, creating opportunities, supporting local economies, and adding strength and stability.
Most are feeling a financial strain right now, and are worried about the future. Now is the time to remind ourselves, supporting locally & diversely owned businesses is supporting the community we call home.
What Can I Do?
You may be saying, “I understand why it’s important to support these businesses, but what can I do?” The answer is a lot easier than you think. Simple tactics and changes of habits can make a huge difference. Get in the proper mind set, we’re all in this together. Start with, if you need to buy something, try your local store first. You’re in need of a service-who are your local providers? Now that you’ve got the ball rolling, check our 4 Tips on Supporting Local & Diversely Owned Business.
Four Tips on Showing Your Support for Locally & Diversely Owned Business
- Get to Know Your Neighbor. Check-in, get to know the local businesses in your community. Ask how you can offer support -are they open or selling online, do they sell gift cards, share their information on social media. Actively participate.
- Recognize the Helpers & Pay it Forward. Many local businesses are great neighbors, doing what they can to contribute the health and wellbeing of the community. We’ve witnessed our friends, coworkers and neighbors offering pro bono services, donations and volunteering with the institutions that help feed and support the most vulnerable members of our community. Support these business- they strengthen us all.
- Order Take-Out. Sure, it sounds simple but with limited (many still closed) dine-in options and reduced capacity local restaurants are dependent on take-out and delivery offerings to survive. In addition, think about treating clients or coworkers, in these times we know they could use the pick-me up, it helps the economy and serves as word of mouth marketing.
- Get on Social Media & Spread the Word. The pandemic crisis has affected everyone, you may not have extra money to spend right now. That’s ok, you can still help support local business by spreading the word. Is there a local business that you care about? Get on social media- share their info, write a review, share their posts. Word of mouth marketing is a huge value to relationship based businesses.
It’s all related- we know if we want to see our communities thrive, the businesses in them need to thrive. Ultimately, it’s going to be up to us, the local consumers and customers, to support local and diverse business. These businesses are made up of our families, neighbors and friends- we’re all in this together. We’re local, Be Local, Support Local.

SERVPRO is proud to support those who support this community we call home!
Worcester, MA June , 2020 -SERVPRO of Worcester was pleased to visit the Worcester Boys & Girls Club and offer support for their food pantry. The food pantry provides families in the Worcester Community with non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products and household supplies.
Since it's opening in 2017, the food pantry has assisted over 200 of our families experiencing difficult times.
More recently due to the pandemic crisis, the need has been greater. More families have been out of work, children who would normally receiving meals at school have been coming to the club for their "Grab & Go" FREE bag lunches program
Program and the club served as an emergency childcare site for essential workers.
Through all of these uncertain times, the Worcester Boys and Girls club has continued to support the Worcester community, we call home.
We are proud to offer our continued support and encourage you to consider helping however you can.

Thank you to all of Heroes on the Frontlines!
Here are a few ideas on how to say thank you to the people on the front lines of battle against the Coronavirus
2020 has been a rollercoaster of fear and emotions. The world was thrown into a state of change that had not been seen for several generations. At the front of the COVID battle, our heroes stood strong, not wearing tights or capes, but uniforms, scrubs, masks, and gloves all ready to fight this for all of us.

Restaurant Gift Cards
It would be great to give out large enough giftcards so they could take their whole family to dinner, but think about ways to stretch your funds farther to reach more heroes.
Consider $5 - $10 gift cards to local restaurants. This will give enough money for either a drink or appetizer. It will also help the economy and struggling restaurants.
Food Drop Off
You will probably have to coordinate this in advance, but schedule a meal that you can deliver to our heroes. They will love some food to refuel. Dropoffs at police stations, fire halls, and emergency rooms are sure to boost moral.
Letters of Encouragement
Take the time to sit down with family and write letters of encouragement to these heroes, expressing your appreciation for what they’re doing. If you have children, get them to draw these heroes. Their artwork will be a blessing to these first responders. You can send them or hand-deliver (at a safe distance) to your local fire halls, police stations and hospitals. They are separated from their families right now; these letters will include them in yours.

COVID-19 Control Plan Template
All Massachusetts businesses must develop a written control plan outlining how its workplace will comply with the mandatory safety standards for operation in the COVID-19 reopening period. Cities and states are taking increasingly drastic measures to curb the severity of the pandemic, including the closing of bars, restaurants, and public venues. In some areas, officials have issued “shelter in place” orders in order to compel residents to stay in their homes and limit movement. To further protect yourself, minimize your exposure with the following tips:
Practice Good Hygiene
- Clean hands with sanitizer and wash your hands frequently
- Avoid touching your face and cover coughs and sneezes

National Burn Awareness Week 2020
In Observation of National Burn Awareness Week, SERVPRO of Worcester would like to share the following information Regarding First-Degree Burn First Aid.
The American Burn Association’s Burn Prevention Committee recommends the following guidelines for the treatment of minor burns. Please note that even a small burn, may have the potential to become infected. It is always advisable to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Remember, when in doubt or if you think the individual’s life is in danger, call 911.
What’s a First-Degree Burn?
First-Degree Burns are burns which involve the outer most layer of skin and are usually associated with a sun burn. Such an injury may occur from too much exposure to the sun (gardening, sunbathing, etc.). The skin is usually still intact, but may appear to be red, very warm or hot to touch and painful. There may also be small blisters, and swelling in and around the area of injury.
Initial first-aid treatment for a first-degree burn include the following:
DO’s
- Stop the burning process: cool the burn with running cool (not cold) water for at least 5 minutes. But do not use ice, as this may cause further skin damage. Do not over cool! If the victim starts to shiver, stop the cooling process.
- Remove all jewelry, watches, rings and clothing around the burned area as soon as possible.
- Administer an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain control. Follow the directions on the label. Consult a physician or health care provider if pain is not relieved.
- Cover the burn with a sterile gauge bandage or clean cloth. Wrap the burned area loosely to avoid putting too much pressure on the burn tissue.
- Minor burns will usually heal without further treatment.
- For small area burns, apply soothing lotions that contains aloe vera to the burned area to help relieve the pain and discomfort.
- Seek medical attention if there is a persistent fever not relieved by medication or redness that may extend beyond the border of the burn or pain is not controlled by ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Drink plenty of fluids (electrolyte containing solutions such as Gatorade) if the person appears to be dehydrated.
DON’TS
- Do not apply ice – this may cause further damage to the skin.
- Do not use any butter, ointments or other home remedies on the burn. Such substances may trap the heat in the tissue and makes the burn worse.
- Do not break any blisters…leave intact.
- Do not delay seeing medical attention if the burn is larger than the size of the victim’s palm.
Healing
It may take several days for a mild first-degree or second-degree burn to heal. During that time, it is important that the affected area is observed for infection, such as redness extending beyond the burned area, changes in the appearance of the wound or slight fever not relieved by Tylenol. As your skin begins to heal, you may also notice that it will itch, which can be very uncomfortable at times. This is normal and will eventually decrease. Frequent application of lotion can help keep the skin hydrated and minimize the itching process. If the itching is too severe, an over-the-counter medication such as Benadryl® may be helpful in easing the discomfort. Remember...always follow the directions on the label. The wound should be kept clean with daily dressing changes. If you have any concern or questions, consult your healthcare provider. Once the burn has healed, limit the exposure of the burn skin to direct sunlight. Always wear sun protection.
Following the above guidelines should promote healing to most minor burns.

On Friday January 24, 2020 SERVPRO of Worcester was proud to have been a part of something much bigger than business.
We had the honor of presenting a check, along with the Worcester Bravehearts, in support of the Menard Children’s Fund.
We were grateful for the opportunity to recognize a true hero, Lt. Jason Menard . His selflessness, service and sacrifice to the people of Worcester will not soon be forgotten.

Flooding generally happens from three sources: Storms, Faulty Plumbing and the Results From A Fire. Regardless of the source, however, water has to be removed, and the excess moisture must be drawn from your property and the surrounding environment as quickly as possible.

Central Street Traffic Island in Worcester, MA
SERVPRO of South Worcester continued its adoption of the island on Central Street in Worcester. Team members weeded, mulched and planted the island this month to get it ready for spring! Pansies were planted in three planters in the center of the island. The planters will be planted with new plants in the summer, and then again in the fall.
SERVPRO of South Worcester's island is located on Central Street, right outside of the Worcester Post Office.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.* The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.
Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fireescape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.
Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance. For more on emergency preparedness, contact SERVPRO of South Worcester.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
- Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms.
- Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
- Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps,” the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
